If a patient chooses to use their medical insurance the consultation costs may be higher depending on their deductible and copay.  If the cosmetic surgery is booked that day,  the cosmetic consultation fee is used towards the cost of the surgery. 1. Your Consultation Is a True Medical Evaluation — Not a Sales Appointment

A consultation with Dr. Thiagarajah is not a quick look or a generic quote. It’s a comprehensive medical evaluation performed by a dual-trained oculoplastic surgeon and neuro-ophthalmologist who has performed over 12,000 eyelid surgeries.

During your visit, Dr. Thiagarajah:

This level of detail simply cannot be provided in a “free” visit designed to sell a procedure. You’re receiving a medical opinion, not a sales consultation.

3. The Consultation Protects You from Unnecessary or Inappropriate Procedures

During your consultation, you may discover that surgery isn’t necessary—or that a different approach would give you a better result. Dr. Thiagarajah’s role is to guide you honestly, not to “close a sale.”

By charging a consultation fee, he ensures that each visit is focused on your best medical and aesthetic outcome, not on volume or upselling. His practice is busy enough that he wants happy patients who are good candidates not cases to fill a schedule.

A $200 non-refundable cosmetic consultation fee is collected at the time of scheduling to reserve your appointment. Because consultation slots are limited and reserved exclusively for you, the fee is not refunded if an appointment is canceled or rescheduled.

6. Second opinion consultations are much more complex and time consuming

​

Second-opinion consultations are often more complex and time-consuming than standard consultations. They typically require a detailed review of prior surgical records, photographs, operative reports, and the patient’s current eyelid anatomy, as well as a careful discussion of what can—and cannot—reasonably be improved. Because these consultations require more analysis, risk , expertise, and a longer appointment, the fee is $500.

Patients must choose either a cosmetic consultation or an insuranc consultation before the visit. Once services are rendered and billed, consultation type can't be changed retroactively. Insurance consultations are subject to deductible, copay and co-insurance obliqgations even if surgery is ultimately determined not to meet insurance criteria.

There are three components of the cost of a blepharoplasty or cosmetic eyelid surgery.

The facility fee is simply the cost for the location where the procedure is done. If the procedure is done in the office, the facility fee may be very low. If the procedure is done in the hospital the fee for the facility can be $10,000 dollars. Usually in a surgery center, the fee is set to a reasonable rate. I recommend to patients that though they can get the procedure for the upper eyelids done in the office and it would result in reducing the facility (and anesthesia) fee, it is dependant on the honesty of the patient to whether they can handle the procedure without anesthesia. Also, in the surgery center, there is a controlled environment with more equipment and monitoring. Blepharoplasty patients who have health problems are encouraged to have their procedure where heart rate monitoring and oxygen levels can be monitored. The facility fee is anywhere between 1500 and 2500 dollars depending on the length of time for the blepharoplasty procedure, if both the upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are performed etc.

 

The anesthesia fee is the fee the anesthesiologist charges. This is usually a low rate between 500 and 1500 dollars. The anesthesiologist makes the patient comfortable during the procedure. Again, a patient who is anxious or pain sensitive should not try to reduce costs by asking for no anesthesia. That would be a mistake and increases the risk of complications by increased bleeding, increased blood pressure and patient movement. 

 

The final fee is the surgeon fee. It is the fee that is charged for the upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty or both. This fee is anywhere between 3550 and 6000 dollars. It is largely dependant on what is being done and how long the procedures will take. In summary the surgeon fee upper blepharoplasty will cost approximately 3750 dollars, lower blepharoplasty 4250 and upper and lower blepharoplasty together 7500.
